This assignment is itinerant, serving students across 5–6 school buildings, and mileage reimbursement is provided

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) will provide specialized instruction and consultation services to students who are blind or visually impaired, supporting their access to the curriculum and promoting independence across K–12 grade levels. The TVI will work collaboratively with classroom teachers, related service providers, and families to ensure appropriate accommodations, modifications, and assistive technology supports are implemented. This role requires travel between multiple school sites and is best suited for an educator who thrives in a dynamic, mobile work environment.

Position Details

  • Position: Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

  • Location: In-person, itinerant across 5–6 schools in St. Clair County, IL

  • Start Date: ASAP

  • End Date: May 30, 2027

  • Hours: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday

  • Weekly Hours: 35 guaranteed hours

  • Caseload: Approximately 12–13 students

  • Grade Levels: Kindergarten–12th grade

  • Travel: Mileage reimbursed

  • School Year: 2026–2027

  • Setting: In-person strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and consultative services to students who are blind or visually impaired across multiple school buildings.

  • Assess student needs and participate in the development and implementation of IEPs.

  • Adapt and modify instructional materials to ensure accessibility for students with visual impairments.

  • Teach compensatory skills such as Braille, assistive technology use, tactile graphics, and organizational skills.

  • Collaborate with general and special education staff to support curriculum access and appropriate accommodations.

  • Communicate regularly with families, teachers, and related service teams to coordinate services and monitor progress.

  • Travel between school locations to meet student needs and maintain consistent services.

Qualifications

  • Valid Illinois teaching license with endorsement as Teacher of Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired (required).

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Visual Impairments, Special Education, or related field.

  • Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired preferred.

  • Knowledge of Braille, low-vision devices, and assistive technology tools.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • Reliable transportation for itinerant travel (required).
